Justin (180 - 255 CE) lived in the third century CE, when the Roman Empire had begun its catastrophic collapse. He didn't write an original book, but he did write an "epitome" of a book called, The Philippic History of Pompeius Trogus. This is important because the original book by Pompeius Trogus did not survive the Dark Age. The only way we can get a glimpse of what was in Trogus' book is by reading Justin's epitome of it. |

This is Justin's "epitome" of The Philippic History of Pompeius Trogus. Pompeius Trogus wrote this history around the year 1 CE. When Justin read it 200 years later, he was quite taken by it, but decided it was too long, and that he could improve upon it by taking out all that "did not make pleasurable reacing or serve to point a moral," thus creating his epitome of the work. Like Trogus' original, Justin's epitome consists of a total of 44 "books." Books 11 and 12 deal with the reign of Alexander the Great, and these two books are the focus of the book you see to the left. |
